Electrification In Progress!
On 14 August 2025, Byron Shire Council voted unanimously to consult the community on a proposal to require newly built homes and commercial buildings to be all-electric. If supported by the community, council will likely roll the changes out in two stages: Stage 1 – residential and Stage 2 commercial. Byron would also be one of the first councils that relies on bottled rather than mains gas, to join the Electrify Your Council movement. Why is this important?

All-electric, gas-free homes and businesses are: 

  • Good for the climate, as less energy is needed to heat and cool electric, efficient homes and businesses, reducing our reliance on polluting gas. 
  • Good for our health, as electric appliances like stoves, heaters and cooktops don’t produce the harmful toxins and pollution that gas ones do
  • Cheaper to run, meaning lower energy bills, especially for renters and people on low incomes
