Keep South Australia's Food Bowl Frack Free

We call on the Malinauskas Government to retain the existing ban on hydraulic fracturing (fracking) and honour the community's decade-long commitment to protecting this place from gas pollution.
Why is this important?
On Thursday 14 May, news broke that legislation will be introduced to remove a 10-year ban on fracking in South Australia's South East.
South Australia has been a national leader in the clean energy transition, transforming its grid from 1% renewable generation to over 74% in 2024, aiming for 100% net renewables by 2027. Our state has shown the courage to choose a sustainable path forward, embracing renewable energy and protecting this precious place for generations to come. The 10-year fracking moratorium is not just an environmental protection – it's a statement about who we are as a state.
- Water Security for All Farming Families South Australia is home to some of Australia's most productive agricultural land, supported by fragile aquifer systems that are the lifeblood of our farming communities. Fracking threatens this precious groundwater – the very resource that sustains our food bowls and wine regions. Once contaminated, these aquifers may never recover.
- Clean, Green Reputation We are internationally renowned for premium food and wine produced in a clean, green environment. Fracking would place this valuable reputation at risk. People across Australia and the world seek out South Australian produce precisely because of our clean environment and sustainable practices.
- Leading the Energy Transition South Australia has been at the forefront of Australia's renewable energy revolution. We've shown that a thriving economy and clean environment can go hand in hand. Retaining our fracking ban demonstrates our commitment to a genuine energy transition, not a return to outdated, risky technologies that undermine our clean energy future.
The decision we make today will impact generations to come.
Our children and grandchildren will inherit the consequences of our choices about water security, environmental protection, and the type of economy we build. We have a moral obligation to leave them a South Australia that is cleaner, greener, and more sustainable.
Let South Australia continue to lead the way in clean energy and environmental protection.
Let us remain a state that chooses long-term sustainability over short-term gain, and that puts our children's future first.
We urge all Members of Parliament to protect our South East and retain the fracking ban.
How it will be delivered
We will deliver this petition before the legislation is introduced for discussion in the South Australia Parliament over the coming days.
