Electrify North Sydney!

Electrification In Progress!
At its 11 December 2023 Council meeting, Cr Zoe Baker, Mayor of North Sydney Council, moved a Mayoral Minute for council to explore opportunities to require new homes be fully electric by amending local planning policies. Then at the 25 August 2025 council meeting, council voted to consult the community on a proposal to require new residential and commercial buildings be all-electric. Why is this important?

All-electric, gas-free homes and businesses are:

  • Good for the climate, as less energy is needed to heat and cool electric, efficient homes and businesses, reducing our reliance on polluting gas.
  • Good for our health, as electric appliances like stoves, heaters and cooktops don’t produce the harmful toxins and pollution that gas ones do
  • Cheaper to run, meaning lower energy bills, especially for renters and people on low incomes
