Protect Larrakia Country: Stop the Middle Arm Gas Hub

Our banner at a rally before the Middle Arm Senate Inquiry in April 2024 (Organised by ECNT)
To Federal Labor leaders,

As Larrakia people, we carry an ancestral responsibility to care for Larrakia Country and all life in, and around, Darwin.

Today, that Country — and everyone who calls it home — is under threat. A federally funded, polluting gas project at Middle Arm risks damaging our land, sea, culture, and community for generations.

Darwin Harbour and Middle Arm are not empty spaces for industrial expansion. They are places of fishing and crabbing, teaching and ceremony, and rites of passage for future generations. They hold shell middens and ancient rock art carved by our Ancestors. This is living Country.

Public money should never be used to harm Country, undermine culture, or lock Darwin into a polluting future.

We call on you to:

  • Immediately stop the $1.9 billion in public funding for the Middle Arm gas hub in the May 2026 Federal Budget.
  • Redirect this funding to a First Nations‑led just transition for Darwin, including:
    • renewable energy, climate‑safe jobs, care and creative work
    • community care, youth support, and strong social services
    • regenerative local economies
    • land reforestation and creek restoration
    • Larrakia language and cultural revitalisation
    • First Nations health, wellbeing, and healing on Country
  • Hold fossil fuel corporations accountable by requiring full rehabilitation of land and sea damaged at Middle Arm, and returning them to the protection and care of Larrakia people.

Protecting Darwin Harbour is about responsibility and the future we leave to the next generation.

We urge you to stand with Larrakia people, respect Country, and choose a future that sustains life — not one that destroys it.

Why is this important?

Darwin knows what care looks like.

We know how to feed families and whole communities with a line and a hook. We know how to stand together and make sure no one is left behind.

That spirit is under threat.

Greedy fossil fuel corporations want to dredge our harbour, pollute our seas, and poison our water — all to make a quick buck. The proposed expansion of the Middle Arm gas hub risks destroying the very things that make Darwin home.

It doesn’t have to be this way.

The Federal Labor Government has a responsibility to the people of Darwin and to Larrakia Country. Instead of throwing $1.9 billion of public money into a polluting gas hub, the government must fund what truly sustains us — a safe climate and thriving communities.

That money could protect what we love: clean seas, a living harbour, restored creeks, cooling forests, and families with secure futures.

Darwin life is unique, vibrant, and abundant. We know how to make a lot with a little. We know how to care for each other and for Country.

Tell the Federal Labor Government to throw a line to our future — protect Darwin Harbour from pollution and greed, and invest in a First Nations‑led future that cares for people and Country.

How it will be delivered

We will deliver this petition to the Federal government in May 2026 to coincide with the Federal Budget. Our plan is to crowdfund to take a delegation of First Nations and Pasifika land and sea protectors to Canberra whose lives, lands and lineages will be impacted by this project if it goes ahead.
