Make Big Polluters Pay Their Fair Share: Sunshine Coast Council Region
We support big coal, oil and gas corporations paying their fair share for the costs of climate change. Local councils and residents shouldn’t be left holding the bill while corporations pocket the profits.
We call on Sunshine Coast Council to pass a Polluter Pays motion to support a Climate Compensation Fund, which would help protect local services, strengthen and repair infrastructure, and fund disaster response and preparedness – ensuring our community can stay safe and thrive.
Council should formally call on the Australian Federal Government to:
- Establish a Climate Compensation Fund, paid for by a levy on major coal, oil and gas export corporations – not ratepayers and taxpayers;
- Earmark funds for local councils to cover the rising costs of climate adaptation, disaster recovery and resilience;
- Provide sustained, legislated funding so councils can plan for the future with certainty; and
- Prioritise protecting ratepayers and taxpayers from bearing the escalating costs of climate damage.
Why is this important?
The “Polluter Pays” principle is simple – if you make a mess, you should clean it up.
The residents of the Sunshine Coast, like most other Australians, are having to pay to clean up after the effects of climate pollution from the wealthy fossil fuel industry. We're paying through increased rates, insurance, rents and in some cases heartbreak with personal injury, property inundation, bushfire and storm damage. Meanwhile fossil fuel companies, who have known for decades about the climate impact of their product, take the country's resources and money, and leave the mess behind. It's not fair!
Local councils are especially impacted by the increased severity and frequency of extreme weather. Make Polluters Pay Sunshine Coast are urging the Council to lobby the Federal Government to establish a levy on coal, oil and gas corporations to go into a Climate Compensation Fund. The Fund would help support communities facing climate disasters and offset rising household costs from climate change. A Climate Pollution Levy is fair!
