• Help us make big polluters Pay Their Fair Share - petition to Launceston Council
The “Polluter Pays” principle is simple – if you make a mess, you should clean it up.  Communities like ours are already paying the price of climate change through higher insurance premiums and increasing disaster recovery bills. Meanwhile, big coal, oil and gas corporations are making billions exporting Australia’s resources, often while paying no tax and pocketing huge government subsidies. Our community is already experiencing the impacts of climate pollution – from floods and bushfires to heatwaves and coastal erosion. Local councils are on the frontline, responsible for roads, drainage, community facilities and emergency response – but right now the costs of disasters are rising faster than council revenue.  A Climate Compensation Fund could help pay for: 🚨Disaster response and preparedness  😌 Insurance relief for disaster-hit communities 🏠 Flood-proofed homes 🏛️ Upgraded community halls and evacuation centres 🌳 Shaded streets and cool public spaces 🚒 Well-resourced emergency services ✨ An Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Climate Self Determination Fund 👷 Support for a just transition for workers and their families ➕ And much more… Delivery plans This petition will be delivered to Launceston Council who will be encouraged to table it as part of a successful Polluter Pays motion.

  • Make Big Polluters Pay Their Fair Share: Sunshine Coast Council Region
The “Polluter Pays” principle is simple – if you make a mess, you should clean it up.  The residents of the Sunshine Coast, like most other Australians, are having to pay to clean up after the effects of climate pollution from the wealthy fossil fuel industry.  We're paying through increased rates, insurance, rents and in some cases heartbreak with personal injury, property inundation, bushfire and storm damage.  Meanwhile fossil fuel companies, who have known for decades about the climate impact of their product, take the country's resources and money, and leave the mess behind.  It's not fair! Local councils are especially impacted by the increased severity and frequency of extreme weather.  Make Polluters Pay Sunshine Coast are urging the Council to lobby the Federal Government to establish a levy on coal, oil and gas corporations to go into a Climate Compensation Fund.  The Fund would help support communities facing climate disasters and offset rising household costs from climate change.   A Climate Pollution Levy is fair!   A Climate Compensation Fund could help pay for: 🚨Disaster response and preparedness  😌 Insurance relief for disaster-hit communities 🏠 Flood-proofed homes 🏛️ Upgraded community halls and evacuation centres 🌳 Shaded streets and cool public spaces 🚒 Well-resourced emergency services ✨ An Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Climate Self Determination Fund 👷 Support for a just transition for workers and their families ➕ And much more… Delivery plans This petition will be delivered to Sunshine Coast Council who will be encouraged to table it as part of a Polluter Pays motion.
